Work Schedules and the Family Time of Korean Married Couple with Children

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the work schedules of Korean married couple with children and to examine how family time are constituted according to the work schedules. Data source is 2014 Korea time use survey and multiple sequence analysis was performed to analyze couple-combined work schedules in temporal context. As a results 11 work schedules types are derived, which are classified into 6 dual earner types, 3 male earner types, 1 female earner type and 1 non-working type. Amount of family sharing time in weekdays is about two hours per day on average. The family time shows significant differences between men and women in the amount of time as well as characteristics of time, which is that women spend more functional time such as housework and men spend more interaction-based time such as family sharing time. The long hours work mainly affects family time negatively, also non-standard hours work is significantly playing a role to interrupt having family time. According to the results it suggests that the long hours work need to be overcome and non-standard hours work need to be limited as well. Additionally we need to consider the quality of family time for increasing the quality of life.
